singillatim | so take me however I seem to be, haunted I know

Kate Marsh and Edward Little are no strangers to the Community Hall. For the former, it is a strange kind of home. Temporary, perhaps. Perhaps not. She has nowhere else to go, and lacks the nerve to find somewhere on her own — finding safety in numbers. For the latter, it is another part of this community to patrol, to check on those who dwell within. The former is one of those he checks in on frequently, ever since that day on the edge of the Basin’s cliffs.

Some days, he comes across Kate as she sits at the tables. She may be hunched over her bible, neatly writing in the pages, highlighting passages before turning to her notes. Or perhaps she’s drawing, and she will lift up the paper to show him with a small smile to see what he thinks.

The style is… modern, he thinks. But she’s very good, and he will gently compliment her work. She’s happy for the kind words, and Kate tells him how she’d like to be a children's book writer and illustrator one day. It is a fitting career for her, he thinks. These are good days.

Some days, he lingers in the doorway to the kitchen where she can be found — humming church hymns as she washes dishes. Occasionally, she slips into the words: a low, sweet voice for a line or two before she lapses back into humming once more.

He listens for a moment before he remembers it is impolite to eavesdrop and he makes his presence known. She is in brighter spirits, talkative as she works. Those too are good days.

Some days, which are his favourite of all, he arrives just at the right time of day to catch her when she plays her violin. She told him once that Mozart was her favourite, and she knows how much he enjoys hearing her play. He removes his cap, tucks it under his arm to listen, an engaged and enthralled audience.

Sometimes, her gaze lifts and she catches his — realising he’s come to listen to her play. Her smile is shy, but there’s a little more enthusiasm to her bow work. Those are good days, perhaps even the best days.

But not all days are good days.

Of course, there are days where she cannot be found at the tables, by the fire, or in the kitchen. The air is bereft of music. Edward feels it in his stomach, a tightening dread, his footsteps a little quicker as he moves through the Hall to find her. His heart booms in his chest, a hammer against taut cloth: Not again, he worries. Please, not again.

The Voice has made no further move on her, he thinks. But he cannot be sure. The threat of it hangs over them all.

She lies on top of her cot, turned away — hair wilted and wild from last night’s sleep (or sleepless night, perhaps). Kate hides her face into white deer fur, the blanket she was gifted by the mysterious spectral stag that stalked the town and its outskirts for a few weeks. Her fingers curling and uncurling into it over and over, staring into the soft blankness of it with vacant eyes. She doesn’t know if the action soothes her, or if she’s too restless.

Footsteps approach, boots slowing and then… growing careful. She considers feigning sleep, but doesn’t have the energy to. She doesn’t have the energy to do anything. She’ll hear his voice, hushed and thick with concern. He calls her name.

She doesn’t answer him. There is silence.

Edward’s hands flex at his sides, he considers for a moment. He does not know if he should retreat or persist, but settles on the latter. He cannot abide the former, nothing in him will allow it.

‘Are you unwell, Miss Marsh?’ he asks gently. ‘Shall I fetch Doctor Goodsir?’

She doesn’t answer him.

‘Miss Marsh, I—’ he does not finish. Kate cannot see his face, she doesn’t know what he’s doing, what his face looks like. The silence seems to last an age, and Kate soon hears the sound of his boots retreat.

It doesn’t last long. Once more, they draw close and suddenly there’s a blur of greatcoat, and the sound of something being put down on the floor in the walkway space that separates her cot from the one next to hers. A chair. One of the foldable ones used at the tables. Kate doesn’t react, her eyes feel heavy.

‘Forgive me.’ his voice is hushed, and Kate wonders what he’s done to be forgiven for because she can’t seem to think of anything.

Edward sits, and is silent. She hears him inhale deeply, the chair creaks with it. His entire body swelling with it and then deflating with the exhale. He does not move for some time after that. He looks down at her for a moment, brows knitted.

Kate’s eyes stare into the deer fur, her fingers close around the faint hairs — she thinks of dog fur, if dog fur could ever be as soft. Maybe it could. She likes dogs. Dogs are nice. Wagging tails, cold noses. There was a dog here, once. It’s gone now. She never got to pet it.

It’s funny, she thinks. There are other dogs here. One is right here. They call it that, don’t they? The big, black dog. She’s sure it’s on her now, some huge and monstrous thing, lying on top of her — too heavy to move, suffocating her. The dog is so tired and sad, and it crushes her beneath it. Bad dog, sad dog.

He shifts a little. In the blurred peripherals, she sees it: he offers a hand out to her, palm upwards. The words replay in her mind: If you are drifting, then I will extend my hand to hold onto you. Please— know that there is a hand there, and so long as you are in this place, it will be there. Please know that.

Here is another kind of dog, she thinks. Not a big black one, but brown. This one is tired and sad, too. He does not crush her, but sits beside her: watchful and still, attentive. This dog is a blessing.

Silently, her hand lifts from the fur and finds his, fingers curling to grip it. His skin is cracked and rough. Edward grips her hand gently in return, offering a slight squeeze.

Finally, he speaks:

‘Today is not a good day.’ he states quietly, and the worry bleeds through. She wishes she could grasp at the shame it makes her feel, but it too is smothered by the dog above her. She is sorry, always sorry.

‘No.’ her voice is barely a whisper, hoarse from not speaking in so long.

‘I understand.’ Edward nods once, then wets his lips. ‘Have you need of anything else?’

The silence is short: ‘No, this is okay.’

Edward shifts slightly in his chair, as if to settle himself. His head dips slightly. Perhaps he might try to coax her out of her cot, in time. But for now, his watch begins. A tired and sad dog. Gently, he squeezes her hand again, as if to make a point with his next words.

‘Then you shall have my hand for as long as you need it.’

singillatim | cr chart (updated 17/8/2025)

CURRENT.

ARTHUR LESTER
MALEVOLENT
●●●○○○○○○○
Initially mistaken for another Interloper she knew, Kate has come to find Arthur kind and affable. He's also pretty great at piano. It's actually rare to meet someone who's come across actual gods existing in their own world, which is invaluable to them here.
BIGBY WOLF
THE WOLF AMONG US
●●●●●●○○○○
The Big But Not-So-Bad Wolf. Sheriff Wolf is a person of authority who Kate respects and admires. It's actually pretty cool he's the actual Big Bad Wolf, but he's actually a very good boy very kind and considerate. One time, she gave him pets while he was in Wolf form. She will take this secret to her grave.
CHARLES ROWLAND
DEAD BOY DETECTIVES
●○○○○○○○○○
They met in the bathroom of the Community Hall, with Charles bleeding profusely with a gnarly headwound. Kate fixed it.
CHLOE FRAZER
UNCHARTED
●●○○○○○○○○
One time, Chloe punched Kate in the face and knocked her out, giving her a heck of a shiner. They're kinda okay now.
CORNELIUS HICKEY
THE TERROR
○○○○○○○○○○
The traitorous Caulker's Mate of HMS Terror. She detests him and his actions. In part, Kate fears him and does her best to stay well away — even if this place is determined to keep shoving them together.
EDWARD LITTLE
THE TERROR
●●●●●●●●●○
First Lieutenant of HMS Terror. The first person Kate ever met in the Northern Territories and has become the person she holds most dear in this place. He's become the person she trusts a great deal, respects and admires, along with her protector. She adores the bones of this man. God sent her an angel in the form of Edward Little.
JAMES FITZJAMES
THE TERROR
●●●●○○○○○○
Commander of HMS Erebus. Kate doesn't know Fitzjames well, but she finds him likeable and his position of Commander earns him her respect. She showed him what a selfie was. This is an absolute highlight.
JOHN IRVING
THE TERROR
●●●●●●●●○○
Third Lieutenant of HMS Terror. Hickey once likened Kate to a teenage girl version of John Irving and he was absolutely correct. Practical, kind and devout. She finds a kindred spirit in Irving, and it's actually a great joy to have a bible study friend after all this time.
LEVI JORDAN
FEAR & HUNGER 2: TERMINA
●●●●●○○○○○
Kate finds him shy, but he's nice. Levi's homeworld makes Kate worry a whole lot, considering he's her age but has already been fighting in wars. She's also side-eying the whole 'religion' situation there, too.
LOUIS DE POINT DU LAC
INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE
●●●○○○○○○○
A gentleman and a businessman. Louis is courteous, but also not afraid to get into the thick of things when things got real rough during the haunted house fire.
RANDVI
ASSASSIN'S CREED
●●○○○○○○○○
Kate might not know Randvi totally well, but she liked the woman and was fascinated by her time period. It was really cool to speak with someone who's from so long ago.
RORSCHACH
THE WATCHMEN
●●●●●●○○○○
A real-life actual superhero. Rorschach is complicated, guarded and has his strict moral codes. But he's someone who ultimately fights for good, and to protect the innocent. There's genuine kindness there underneath.
TIM DRAKE
DC COMICS
●●●●●●●○○○
We're not gonna talk about Tim or how nice his kiss was. He's dumb and weird and exasperates her no end, but it's also really complicated and she cares about him and we're not gonna talk about it.
WYNONNA EARP
WYNONNA EARP
●●●●●●●●○○
Wynanny. A whirlwind of a woman, fierce and protective and ready to kick butt. Also kind of soft and mushy when the situation calls for it. While Wynonna will always be Wynonna and she accepts that, Kate does wish better for her. But she's awesome, and Kate adores her.

GONE.

BENTON FRASER
DUE SOUTH
●●●●●●○○○○
Constable Benton Fraser of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Courteous, intelligent, just and very handsome. Fraser embodies much of what it means to be a good and decent human being and she admires him greatly. Until recently, Kate was absolutely besotted with him. Then it got a bit awkward. She's in her heartbreak era.
DAMIAN WAYNE
DC COMICS
●○○○○○○○○○
Kate met him once following the events of June, she doesn't know much about him.
FRANCIS CROZIER
THE TERROR
●●●●●●○○○○
Former Captain of HMS Terror. A true explorer with a whole lot on his shoulders. It doesn't make him any less kind, and Kate's fond of him. Crozier doesn't sugarcoat things, but he does take care with her when it comes to the difficult conversations.
HARRY GOODSIR
THE TERROR
●●●●●●●●○○
The Assistant Surgeon aboard HMS Erebus who Kate met on her first day in the Northern Territories. A sweet and gentle man who Kate adores and has a familial bond with. She admires his curious spirit and passion to learn new things.
RUBY ROSE
RWBY
●●●●●●●○○○
Kate's bestie. Ruby's a great friend, and also real cool. She's kind and compassionate and really gets the harder, awful stuff that happens in life. She also kicks butt and is a whole lot braver than Kate will ever be.
THOMAS JOPSON
THE TERROR
●●●●●●○○○○
The Captain's Steward of HMS Terror. Jopson isn't quite like his crewmates, and she thinks he's adjusted the most to modern living. Thoughtful, quiet and unassuming — Kate admires the man's kindness, and they're both big fans of Wynonna Earp.

⇓in character⇓

PHYSICAL AFFECTION: If she knows you, she's fine with things like hand holding, or hugs. She really likes hugs, especially from friends. She prefers to keep a polite distance with most people, especially with members of the opposite sex — unless she has more of a familial relationship with them.

PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: ... Why... why would you do that. Kate is a very mundane human with very little in terms of self-defence, or any kind of physical strength. She won't raise her hand to others, and isn't going to fight back all that much — she's more likely just cower from it. (Honestly, you'd be a monster if you wanted to hurt her. It's like kicking a puppy, y'all.)

ROMANCE/FLIRTING: Kate wouldn't really know the first thing to do about any flirting made towards her, in all honesty. It's not to say romance is off the table with her. Possible romance could happen with someone she trusted/befriended around her own age, with a mostly slowburn route — and would not progress sexually.

SEXUAL CONTENT: Kate believes in abstinence, and would not be interested in sexual activities whether the discussion or the act. She'd be noping out hard of that conversation, or trying to shut it down fast.

PSYCHIC ABILITIES: None. She is an open book to others with psychic abilities. Please let me know if you would like any help for threads.

MAGIC/POWERS: None.

MEDICAL INFORMATION:

Physically: Kate is a very healthy eighteen year old girl.

Mentally: in events of pre-canon's beginning, Kate was drugged at a party. She was abducted by a fellow student, under the pretence of being taken to the hospital, to be assaulted and photographed whilst in an inebriated and vulnerable state (as well as possibly sexually assaulted, although not confirmed). Kate does mention that she 'felt gross' the next day.

In the photos seen in canon, Kate has been partially undressed and very likely dosed more to be posed for the photos taken. While she does not remember the events, video footage was leaked of Kate kissing other students at the party whilst in her inebriated state, and has thus been bullied by the student body. She is extremely depressed and does become actively suicidal in canon. Within Singillatim, Kate's canon point is on her way to her suicide attempt, following her conversation with Jefferson that Max can witness the end of.

OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS OR TRIGGERS: Kate is deeply religious and rather conservative in her beliefs. Negative or antagonistic behaviours towards her faith would very much upset her. She is very much against sexual activities, and believes in abstinence, and likely is against sexual activity out of wed-lock. She doesn't drink (other than sips of wine for religious purposes), nor does drugs, and prefers to not be around those kinds of things, especially following the Vortex Club party mentioned before.

⇓first impressions⇓

VISUAL: A slim girl of around 5'6" in height. Tends to dressed fairly modestly, and in plain colours — usually black, grey and white. Soft blue eyes, dirty blonde hair typically worn up in a bun. She looks worn and exhausted as of late, often teary.

AURAL: American accent, West Coast. Softly and politely spoken, generally quite subdued in terms of cadence, if a little cheerful when she's in better spirits.

OLFACTORY: Clean, likely some kind of flowery standard shampoo/body wash used.

DEMEANOR: Meek, and shy. There's a general gentle politeness about her. Relatively reserved. Depressive/listless as of late, Max notes she's been 'walking around like a zombie' in canon.

⇓out of character⇓

BACKTAGGING: Always, being the slow bean I am. I prefer to finish/drop threads within three months however, unless they're heavily related to plot-points. I'd rather finish them over dropping them, but sometimes dropping may happen.

FOURTH WALLING: I'm pretty comfortable with fourth-walling, but doing it for the sake of it isn't something I'm interested in. I would like to discuss things if it were to come up, since Kate does not know she's a video-game character.

THREADHOPPING: Generally fine, but please ask / give a heads up!

CONTENT I ABSOLUTELY NEED WARNINGS FOR, BUT CAN STILL PLAY: I do get uncomfortable / upset with images of crawling / swarming bugs (ie. masses of ants, maggots, spiders) and would prefer images of this are hidden behind links. Written descriptions are fine, but cw warnings would be appreciated.

CONTENT I ABSOLUTELY NEED WARNINGS FOR AND THAT I CAN'T PLAY: Nothing comes to mind. I'm fine with horror / dark themes in general.
